The Hebrew Home of Greater Washington (HHGW), located in Rockville, has been named the top nursing home in Maryland by Newsweek and included on the magazine’s prestigious list of “America’s Best Nursing Homes” for 2025. This honor places HHGW among an elite group of nursing homes, as fewer than 15% nationwide receive this distinction, according to a press release dated November 21.
As the largest nursing home in the mid-Atlantic region, HHGW offers a comprehensive range of services, according to its website. Residents have access to medical and rehabilitative care, social and religious programming, and a host of amenities, including kosher homestyle meals, a library, a beauty salon, dental and podiatry clinics, banking services, and personal laundry care.
The facility boasts on-site, full-time physicians, 24-hour nursing care, and expert rehabilitation services. It is recognized as a BCAT Cognitive Center of Excellence, emphasizing its leadership in cognitive care. HHGW also provides religious services and spiritual support for Jewish and non-Jewish residents alike, reflecting its mission to deliver exceptional care grounded in Jewish values. For an impressive 11th consecutive quarter, HHGW earned a five-star overall quality rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
“When new associates join our team, they quickly realize that empowering older adults is at the heart of what we do,” said Bruce J. Lederman, President and CEO of Charles E. Smith Life Communities, which oversees HHGW. “For over a century, we’ve upheld a commitment to excellence in service. While we strive to maintain the highest standards regardless of external recognition, it is deeply gratifying to receive such accolades.”
Newsweek collaborated with global data research firm Statista to compile its rankings of “America’s Best Nursing Homes” for the fourth consecutive year. The list evaluates 1,050 nursing homes across the 25 states with the most facilities, as determined by CMS data. Rankings are based on four key factors: performance data, recommendations from medical professionals, accreditations, and resident satisfaction, according to Newsweek’s website.
In addition to the Newsweek honor, HHGW earned a “high performing” rating from U.S. News & World Report for both short-term rehabilitation and long-term care. Out of 15,000 nursing homes evaluated nationwide, HHGW ranked in the top 5% for its excellence in both categories.
Described as a “very large facility” with 558 beds, HHGW operates as a nonprofit under corporate ownership. It provides short-term rehabilitation, long-term care, and 24/7 skilled medical services for older adults. Located on the campus of Charles E. Smith Life Communities, a vibrant retirement community in Rockville, HHGW continues to set the standard for compassionate, high-quality senior care.
